“THE CULTURE CREATE THE CONTACT ZONES: FAR EAST”

In May 2019, Points Center for Contemporary Art (Points) formally established international collaboration with Zarya Center for Contemporary Art (Zarya CCA) to start an exchange residency program. In the autumn of 2019, Russian artist Sveta Shuvaeva completed her personal project Made in Jinxi, Made with Sun, taking the local culture of Jinxi ancient town as the cut-in point, extracting ordinary objects in daily-life, rethinking and recreating with her unique observation perspective. It is now officially starting the open call of Chinese artists to go to the “Far East” Russia in 2020.

“Contact Zones: Far East” is organized by Zarya Center of Contemporary Art and the Zarya Foundation for the Development of Contemporary Art supported by BELUGA GROUP. The program is realized in partnership with Points Center for Contemporary Art.

This exchange residence is for artists and cultural practitioners. As part of the program, participants from China will receive residencies in Golubitskaya, Russia for two months, where they can realize interdisciplinary and intercultural research projects on the theme of the Russian Far East. The program is designed to further encourage the research and self- identification of the Primorye and Far East region with its unique geographical and historical features, the development of cultural exchange, and collaboration between Russia and China.

The term “contact zone” was introduced by linguist Mary Louise Pratt in the 1990s to locate the spatial, temporal, geographic, economic, political and bodily interactions between different cultures during historical encounters with one another. Borrowing this understanding as the foundation of the research program, we would like to expand the field of research through studying a wide range of cross-cultural encounters, including the preconceptions, intentions, motivations, compromises, conflicts and accords, as well as the intellectual, emotional and corporal experiences.

The deadline for application will be 31th May 2020. The residence date is undecided and will be adjusted flexibly according to the epidemic situation and border conditions. We will retain the qualifications of the final candidate.
